What to bring on a winter Iceland trip
Iceland in winter with snowstorm days
Compared to Canada and other Scandinavian countries, Iceland does not cool much. However, it will be below freezing, so be prepared. In a nutshell, "look like skiing". It may be a blizzard, and it is essential to take measures against the cold in the open-air sightseeing.

You need a warm jacket and a thick down coat, but you also need something that is water repellent and waterproof so that it is okay especially in the snow. If you don't have such a jacket, you can layer on a fleece, wool and down jacket, and then a waterproof outer jacket. Fleece and wool are recommended, but don't get wet in the event of snow, snowstorms, or sleet. If your jacket gets wet in the cold winter, it will really freeze!

You'll often hear the Icelandic saying "Iceland is not cold. It's cold because you don't wear it well."

A down jacket that can be snowy in winter

Underwear, Innerwear: If you are likely to sweat while participating in an activity, the cotton material will not dry easily and may cause your body to cool down after exercise. For those who take part in glacier hikes and those who sweat easily, we recommend using wool or synthetic material for hiking. Coin laundry is rare in Iceland, and hotels often only accept it during the day. If you can't wash it for a few days, prepare a few so you don't have to worry.

Thick warm sweater or fleece: Make sure you have a wool or fleece sweater. The traditional Icelandic sweater Ropapaisa is light and warm and recommended. Indispensable for snorkeling and hiking.

Waterproof outerwear: There is no need to worry about having ski wear up and down. Outerwear that is not waterproof or water repellent in the snow is fatal. Even if it is sunny, there are many days with strong winds, so an outerwear that does not let wind pass is essential. You can use an outer shell called a mountain climbing shell, but it does not have a cold protection function, so please prepare warm down as an inner layer.

Gloves: It is convenient to have several as they get wet when played with snow.

Knit hat: Two layers can be stacked when it is cold. We recommend a size that covers your ears. You can buy it as a souvenir for yourself after you arrive in Iceland.

Muffler: A knit one is convenient.

Sunglasses: Useful when driving. The winter sun is dazzling because it slips on the horizon.

Anti-slip shoes: After snow, the road surface may freeze and become slippery. It would be nice to have a light crampons like Montbell's reversible grippers.

Hokkairo: It's not necessary, but convenient to have. However, since the wind is strong, it will be cold if windproof measures cannot be taken even if there is a hockey gyro.

It's okay to get wet: A surprisingly blind spot is a bag that carries important things. If your mouth is blocked, you don't have to worry about the contents getting wet.

What to bring in a summer Iceland trip
Iceland at night

There is an image that summer is hot! However, the summer in Iceland never gets hot. The temperature is at most 15 degrees Celsius. Since it is a white night, 24 hours do not set and it does not get extremely cold just because it is night, but if the cold wind from the North Pole blows, it will get cold in no time.

Also, if you move from a temperature of over 30℃ to an environment of about 10℃, you will feel differently. It is a good idea to wear one more piece so that you do not get sick due to temperature differences.

Very few places offer midnight laundry services, especially if you rent a car and stay in different hotels every day.
